Mentoring In Organisations

How do you retain new talent and graduates you invested so much time and effort recruiting and training?

What would be the impact of losing one-third of your workers over the decade? If those who left were your most experienced people, what tacit knowledge, undocumented information and valuable skills would walk out the door with them?

Why is addressing equity in the workplace a strategic imperative and what can you do about it?

These are just a few of the reasons organizations develop a mentoring strategy.

Case Study

Scott Tunkin, of CSR told of learning about the industry from his mentor who has 20 years experience. CSR’s program has 25 young people, some of whom are graduates, teamed with managers. The entire group meets quarterly for breakfast and mentoring partners meet once a month. The General Manager is actively involved and shows a personal interest in individuals.

A key feature of the program is communication. According to Scott, Sally Heron, the Program Coordinator, “keeps us constantly updated, asks: How are you going? She is genuinely interested as a friend”.

The mentees organise after-hours social events and have built up a strong network that contributes to their work life and fun. Mentoring has given the employees a very positive attitude to the company. “We enjoy going to work, we talk about work when we’re out together, we think it’s great”. Mentees are responsible for their own learning during the two-year mentoring partnership. Scott advises: “be like a sponge”.

Effective mentoring:

  • Taps the knowledge and experience of senior people;
  • Builds the personal skills of mentors and those mentored; and
  • Retains talent, develops people and therefore impacts on the bottom line of an organization.
"The Program exceeded expectations. Mentoring reduced turnover of graduates from 30% the previous year to zero in 2002."
